When Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” was released in 1971, the excessive on-screen violence shocked audiences. Today, due to Kubrick’s mastery of cinematography as well as his virtuosic incorporation of music into the film, it is a classic of pop culture. That the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, whose 200th birthday was celebrated last year, plays a central role in Kubrick’s masterpiece is by no means a coincidence.
The late string quartets of Beethoven are universally recognised as masterpieces. The inner harmonic tension of these works sometimes sits at odds with their perceived outward melodious quality. The tension in these late works and their stretching of the limits of both tonality and form mirror the exploration by the gang of youths in Kubrick’s film of the fine lines between freedom, self-determination and provocation.
Musicians of the Gewandhaus Orchestra will combine “A Clockwork Orange” with Beethoven’s late string quartets in the Moritzbastei, revealing both Kubrick’s and Beethoven’s masterpieces in new ways.
Tickets for the performance (under the relevant Corona regulations) are available at the Moritzbastei and at tixforgigs.
