The first KLASSIK underground concert for 2022 was an exhilarating combination of music, light and visual art. Musicians of the Gewandhausorchester performed Schönberg’s “Transfigured Night” Op. 4 for string sextet, together with light and video projections by Australian visual artist, Margie Medlin.
The concert opened with Webern’s “Langsamer Satz” for string quartet, a work that transverses the border between the romantic and modern periods. This work set the tone for the evening and drew the audience in to the intensive musical language characteristic of the turn of the century.
Schönberg’s masterpiece for string sextet was inspired by a poem of the same name by Richard Dehmel, and the highly expressive musical language recounts the emotional intensity of the poem. The recitation of the poem by actor Johannes Gabriel preceded the performance and set up a captivating atmosphere for the re-telling of the poem through music.
The light and video installations by internationally renowned visual artist Margie Medlin created an amazing three-dimensional “transfigured night” around the audience and the musicians. The performance of Schönberg’s music in this setting of the underground Moritzbastei together with the complementing artistic elements was a unique experience, and the audience was enraptured and mesmorized by this memorable concert, which concluded with drinks and chats with the performers at the bar.
